In good years we went to private school in bad years we went to public school. to me school was school, public, private, it made no difference. I had a good time either way and I guess I was smart enough that it didn't make any difference. In those years I loved to read, I still do, especially stories of the sea. My favorite character was Captain Horatio Hornblower. I would have given anything to sail with him or someone like him. I was eleven. When I was twelve, in 1st Form (private school = 7th grade public), I saw Jimmy Stewart in a movie, "Navy Blue and Gold". It was about Midshipmen at the US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland. That would give me a shoot at sailing with the likes of Captain Hornblower. I never wavered, I had to go to the Academy. I'm not sure of what my real intentions were, whether I wanted to be like Jimmy Stewart, Captain Hornblower or what, but i was dedicated to going to the Academy. what a pain I was to my Dad. I needed a congressional appointment to be allowed to apply, so I bothered him until he found someone. I got my appointment, after passing physical and mental (SAT's) tests.
& ; To make a long story short I went to the US Naval Academy, graduated and enjoyed just about every minute of my stay there. The minutes that I didn't enjoy were in chemistry class and running off demerites that I had recieved for minor infractions of the rules. One set of demerites I remember clearly. I was doing a soft shoe dance in the hall after a pre game pep rally bon fire. The officer of the deck wasn't amused. I got two hours running around the football field, carrying a rifle. I was a bit too exuberant, the running took some of that out of me. (Cont)

Interesting article. Bob. It is no wonder why you lived in York, Maine where the Atlantic and Maine Gulf are located -- you loved the sea. Thanks for sharing this. ~~Nenita

, just an old sea dog. He flew B-29's during the Korean conflict. He spent 25 years in Wall Street as a trader. He then went into the corporate world, a very ugly place. Cheating, lying, stealing and bribery were SOP from DuPont to Exxon. He retired in 1990 and went back to trading. Oiy! So then he went to selling computers, it was lonely trading. Selling was more fun. Then he sold Nissans, Hondas, and finally Fords. That was fun. Started to get old so he retired again. Now writing, because he's really irritated with his country's direction as personified by the Republicans & Tea Party horn blowing.
