“You Wanted the Truth America”

Dear Democrat and Republican,

You wanted the truth. The President is giving it to you. Surprise, you don't want to hear it!

I quoted JFK in my last article, it's even more appropriate here. "The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie-deliberate, contrived and dishonest but the myth persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." This is exactly what is going on in our country today. I was on the phone last night with a few Republicans and when asked why they were voting the way that they were, they repeated the same old myths that are being broadcast by the Republican Party and Tea Party. They hated Obama because, and I quote: "he is the worst President that this country has ever had, he does nothing for the middle class worker, the stimulus package was a complete bust and a waste of money, he bailed out the banks when he should have left them just go under, he took over the auto companies to save the unions, we'll never see the $785 billion TARP money and our children and grand children will be saddled with the debt". When I heard so many misstatements, it was impossible for me to answer them all; I didn't have the time or inclination to argue the point. How can you argue with someone who is so uninformed about the nation's state of affairs? The real problem is that I found a lot of Democrats equally uninformed. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "An uninformed people cannot be free" and that's the problem in a nutshell. Our people, American citizens, are selling themselves down the river, just floating merrily along on a raft of lies and innuendo.

Just as an example: I ask you, how much of the $785 billion when all is said and done, will it cost the American taxpayer?

a. 187 billion or more

b. 537 billion or less

c. 50 billion or less

d. 890 billion or less

e. none of the above

Answer: c *

How misguided can a populous be? I've been around for 80 years and all my life, since I was able to understand what was being said, I heard the old myth; "Our grandchildren will be saddled with this debt". I heard this from the Republicans since the days of FDR. This is a growing country; our debt will again be proportionate to our GDP . The Republicans are running an ad that shows a man digging a hole in the ground. The ad tries to equate the hole which is getting bigger and bigger to our national debt. It says that our national debt is equal to our annual GDP (income). Now, if you are a home owner, wouldn't you like to have an annual income equal to your mortgage? Our whole economy runs on credit, including the government. Sometimes when you hit a bad spot, you have to borrow more to get over the bump. That's what our government is doing. Do any of you out there think that the world would lend us the trillions of dollars that they do at ZERO PERCENT INTEREST, if they thought that they wouldn't get paid back. I don't think that they are fools. They know as much about what is going on as anybody here, and they continue to lend.

Common America , think twice before you vote against your best interest.

The uninformed can be so easily manipulated, they're such easy prey. It's very frustrating. Somebody said some time ago that President Obama had brought America to its knees. I was gobsmacked. This blindness is like a blight upon the land.

Jen, I couldn't have said it better myself. You are so right. Do you have the same problem in S Africa? I hope not.

The problem is there is absolutely nothing to stop or censor the outright lies and half truths that come out of their mouths. They are free to propagate innuendos and myths as if they were truths, and we are a country that is a willing recipient of myths and feel good rhetoric. We, as a whole, have no self esteem, and are willing to believe anything that boosts our ego and gives us some sense of superiority. They provide us with that at the expense of our livelihoods. The famous P.T. Barnum said it best, "there is a another fool born every second".

You're right, David. The only thing that I will quibble with is Barnum's statement. You must exchange the word "fool" for SUCKER! ;-) Thanks for the comment
